    Default Small screw driver

Anyone know where to get a GOOD small Phillips screw driver? I need a good #0000 Phillips for working on N scale Shays.
The ones that I have been able to find were much to thick at point of the driver.
Needs to have a small shaft too. Getting the screw off that holds the couplers on is a real pain. The screw is hidden part way under the trucks.
    Thanks in advance

I have had good luck buying watch maker's tools off fee-bay. You might try there.

I picked a whole set of small screw drivers at Home Depot for about $5! It works on my small cars and engines!

Thanks for all of the replies.
I have tried most of the ones you have suggested and they are too large.
I have not looked at E-bay for watch makers tools, so will give that a try.
I have found several #0000's but the tips were not ground to a fine enough point to fit the small screws used in the N scale Shays. Will look at Mc Master-Carr too.
Have you ever looked at the small size of the screws on a N scale Shay?
These screws are very small, and have a very fine slot for the driver to fit into.
I am sure the manufacture must have something to work on these with.
I just have not had any luck in finding them.
    Thanks for you sugggestions.

One wonders if they are not Frearson rather than Phillips?
Note the tip difference for the same size head.

    Thanks Bryan.
That looks to be the type used in the N scale Shays.
I had never heard of the Frearson screws before. Now to find a driver for them.
    Thanks again.
I am off to search for a Frearson screw driver.

If you have a Home Depot nearby, go to the tool section and look for this little micro tool kit:

I have about 5 of these sets because so many hobbies of mine need small screwdrivers and these are really top notch! You get a full set of micro phillips, flathead, torx, square and a few other special tips.

I have a set of jewer's screwdrivers. Six come in the set, and they fit just about anywhere.

    rpcilect.
Looks to be a nice set of screw drivers. The set has only a #1 and a #0 Phillips. Too big.
The problem is as Bryon has pointed out, is these small screws in the N scale Shay are NOT Phillips. They are more than likely the Frearson or Japanese standard.
The screws will be in the#0000 class if you compare them to the Phillips.

    Las Vegas UP.
I have several of these sets of these. All of them are way too large. Most of the sets come with at #1 and a #0 Phillips and these are much too large.
    Thanks for all the help.
I am now looking for a small Frearson type driver.

    If it helps;
Frearson drives are also known as ANSI Type II.
Frearson are a 73° included angle.
Phillips are a 123° included angle.

At least the set you have found has a #0000 Phillips. Most don't.
Still not sure it will work.
Might be a nice addition to the tool box. I am a tool freak any way

I don't know if any of these are what you need, but here's a couple sources for watchmaker's screwdrivers:

I think the watchmakers screwdriver might work better than the #00 i have. It wont even come close to breaking the screw loose on my atlas geep.

Yes, that would be similar to what I got!
