Watched them humping the cars in Port Coquitlam yard while working on machines.....

Yeah, most dangerous place on the rr is in the bowl of a hump yard. Trim jobs are terrible; when you are in there buckling the air you can hear the slack pancaking in, never know if it is your track or the next one that they just humped a car into. Fun to watch, but I like my arms and legs where they are thank you!

    regards,

    Pat

"kicking cars" while flat switching is as dangerous as humping cars for the same reasons mentioned....i worked a 1st shift yard job at a small flat yard in Lansing Mi....2 am in a snow storm you cant hear them cars rolling....a sharp ear on the radio and remembering your job briefing are your biggest friends

There's a blurb in the most recent Classic Trains magazine about a visit to the Pennsylvania's hump yard in Conway. Dwight Long, the author, says:

"After a while I saw a boxcar with a prominent DO NOT HUMP sign going over the crest. I inquired of the tower man about this. His reply: 'Oh hell, sonny, at Conway we hump everything except dynamite, and after dark we hump that too!' "

Unfortunately, it's not dated as to when this conversation took place...
"Do Not Hump!?!?! Does that mean what I think it means?!?"--Michelle Blanchard

"People saw wood and say nothing, but railroad men saw trains and say things that are better left unprinted."--Charles De Lano Hine
