Smile NEW PHOTOS! ~ The DF&D Railroad Company - Part I

Hello everyone... As promised I took a few updated photos of the DF&D this weekend and I am posting them here for your discerning eyes. I am happy to try and answer any questions you might have. Enjoy! — Mister Mahoney

1.) The ol' 32 steams around the bend... watch it! That's a heck of a drop off!

2.) Here's an overview of the layout - my world is round and sits on a pub table.

3.) An overview of Old Dutchman's Hwy.

4.) A view of the plank crossings. A sharp left in between will get you to the Dumluk Mine.

5.) The dirt road down to the mine. Mud and coal muck have even tread over the rail spur.

Thanks Rodney. The track is Peco Code 55 Flex Track. Nice and beefy and well worth the price in my book.

Wowee !! What a layout !! While looking at all the first pictures, I thought it was a going to be a gigantic basement layout & then I saw the overview shot on the pub table & couldn't believe my eyes !! What a great layout & great opprortunities for photo shooting too !!
    Thanks, John

Thanks John. Even we at the house are taken aback by how vast the photos make this little layout. There's a lot going on in a little space. I often wish I had the space for even a door sized layout... alas.

From all the individual scenes depicted in this series, it's a surprise when you see that it is all on a small circular layout.

    Very well done.

Thanks Kevin. Normally I would not advise tasking a Pub Table to do anything but its holy function of holding up beers n' bitters... but in this case, the table was bought for the trains. My wife "found it" in the bargain basement sale of a furniture outlet and we got it for a song. Not pictured are the two matching chairs which make train watching a treat. I have entertained the notion of putting a draught tap on the underside.

Thanks Bryan. I hope to dress these scenes just a little more before I consider the project done.

Holy smokes!! Your modelling skills are something to be aspired to!

Curious about the trees -- are they Woodland Scenics? Custom? How did you get that fine leaf effect -- they look so much more real than what I've been able to produce.

    Awesome work!!!

Thanks Falter. Yes, most all the trees are Woodland Scenics Fine-Leaf Foliage (I should get a fee from them for that plug). I use that product because it is handy for everything from tall trees to ground cover. I don't use the plastic armatures they include because I never seemed to be able to make them look good. I have used pine tree armatures and fine leaf on some pine trees, but I wish I could get the same results forum member Scotchpine is getting.

The overall issue I see with most layout scenery is that trees are not tall enough or clumped enough. Trees are mostly tall... H U G E and I think we don't notice enough. The y become background noise and it shows in how little they are addressed (okay, I'm off my soapbox). The devil is in the details when scenery is concerned. Topography, open space, crowded space, underbrush, detritus, shrubs, deadfall, weeds, textures, etc is all important in my book. I wish I had the same aptitude with the working rail aspects and as others do. Oh well, we play to our strengths. Thanks again!

    Fine-leaf foliage. Check.

So apart from the few WS armatures you use on those pine trees -- what do you use for armatures otherwise? And the deadfall I see in some scenes? I really want to master the ground cover thing and I think you've got that.

Yes, just earlier today I was able to see all those images but now I get a big square with a smaller red square in the upper left corner! I have not idea what is going on!

As an admirer of MisterMahoney's work, I was disappointed not to be able to see the latest pictures.
